Impressions on the new Fallout Shelter update and PC version.

Do you remember Fallout Shelter? Of course you do! It’s that neat little mobile game from Bethesda that let’s you create and manage your own Vault. I also like to call it the waiting game since most of the game is just you waiting for things to happen in your vault. Sure you can send people off into the wasteland to explore, collect items, and fight enemies but this is just as passive as watching your vault people working to collect resources. Okay, to be fair the game does get more interesting once you build up your vault and have more vault dwellers or people exploring the wasteland, but that can take a few real days. While i have put my fair share of time into the mobile version, Bethesda has added some new things with this latest update I thought I would check out.

Fallout Shelter

One of the biggest things about this update is a free PC version. It’s available through Fallout Shelter’s website. Well… sort of. You actually have to download Bethesda’s launcher first then, after navigating that, you can find the download for fallout shelter. The game itself is just over a gigabyte so the download is quick and painless. The game isn’t very intensive so it should work fine on most computers. I played it on my dinky little work computer with no problems. There aren’t any options to customize graphic settings or anything like that as far as i can tell, but you probably won’t need to. The frame rate is better than on mobile devices though, sitting at about 60 Fps. This isn’t really a big deal but makes game play a little smoother. The menus and UI is exactly the same as on mobile. In fact, the game is pretty much an exact port of the mobile version’s outside of a PC friendly control scheme. This control scheme make’s a world of difference. The game is much better and easier to play with a mouse. The mouse essentially acts as your finger. There are hotkey options to use the keyboard as well but I found myself rarely, if ever, using them. Those who played the mobile version probably remember struggling to correctly tap on the right vault dweller or drag them to the correct room but the mouse solves this problem for the most part.

Fallout Shelter

Outside of the PC port there are some other things that were added in an attempt to give the game some more depth. The best of which is the ability to send a group of your vault dwellers on quests. Quest’s have a basic set up like looking for a certain person or enemy. After selecting the quest and group of vault dwellers that are going on said quest, you send them off into the wasteland to manifest destiny. Eventually, after even more waiting, your vault dwellers get to the quest location. These locations are often vault like structures filled with enemies and loot. While most of the loot is fairly decent there is Quantum Cola that you can get. Quantum Cola is good for skipping through the really long wait times involved with going on quests. This is extremely helpful when you are impatient like myself. Overall that’s pretty much it. If you liked the original on mobile and need something to do, in between important work stuff on your computer, this might be for you. If you were annoyed by the sometimes long wait times or shallow game play of the original, then this update probably isn’t going to change your mind.
