Unreal Tournament III Review (PS3)

MEGA KILL! MONSTER KILL! GODLIKE!

Gone are the days of fun and exciting shooters. The realistic military shooter is now the norm, and no matter how much they try to stand out, you always feel as if you’re playing the same game. Call of Medalfield: The Taken King has taken over the FPS genre, and I miss the days of gimmicks and quirky split-screen CTF modes.

Unreal Tournament 3 is the most fun you’ll ever have playing a local multiplayer FPS game, other than the Timesplitters series of course. It’s huge amount of game modes, it’s intriguing factions and it’s over-the-top gory deaths make for the best time you’ve had in the 21st century.

This game fell under the radar as it released in 2007 at a similar time to Call of Duty 4, which is arguably the best CoD game in existence. This game oozes character, and is very addictive should you have a second controller and a willing friend within your vicinity. The split-screen wasn’t on the initial PS3 release, but was later patched in at a time where everyone and their mothers’ cousin had forgotten about it.

Here is a list of game modes available to you in UT3:

  • Deathmatch
  • Team Deathmatch
  • Capture the Flag
  • Duel
  • Warfare
  • Vehicle Capture the Flag
  • Betrayal
  • Greed

You’ll get to play through all of these game modes on the single-player campaign (which can also be done in co-op) other than the two downloadable modes (Betrayal & Greed). Some of them are quite complicated at first but once you’ve completed the campaign you’ll be very fluent in them. There are a lot of vehicles available to you, and they make CTF a hell of a lot more intense and exhilarating, especially when you’re playing on a harder difficulty.

There are also an incredible amount of weapons available in the game too, some being very commonplace such as the shock rifle and link gun (both amazing weapons) and some being extremely rare to come across, such as the Redeemer. The Redeemer will pretty much kill everything in the one shot it has upon pickup, and the game would just be silly if they were more common.

A really cool feature of the PS3 version is that you can download mods from the online browser. This was almost unheard of on the aforementioned console, and tended to require some serious jail-breaking to achieve in other games. It made the Gears of War engine that much more awesome when you were engaging in a ferocious battle with the cast of the Simpson’s on a custom map based on ‘Feel Good Inc.’ by The Gorillaz. I bet Matt Groening never envisioned Homer being blasted into a pile of blood and organs.

UT3 is a game that I will play forever; it’s addictive and incredibly fun. It has so much character and really, really awesome graphics for the time. I miss the time that shooters had this much charm and yearn for a day in the near-future that someone plays with this idea a little bit more.

8/10

Conclusion

‘BRING BACK FPS! UT3 is a fantastic game that everyone should play – especially if you want to score a headshot on Spongebob’.
