The “PC Master Race”

I need to level with you all here, I am a PC gamer and I love PC, I really do. The mods, the customizability, the feeling of overclocking, it’s all amazing. But as I’m sure you’ve seen, for some people this comes with a sense of pride and exclusiveness. Of course, this isn’t everyone, but I feel like it’s time to shine a sense of honesty on this, for the fifteenth thousand time.

Constant upkeep and maintenance

In my experience, I have found that there’s a lot more effort needed to keep my computer in working condition than any console I’ve owned. On top of that, you will find that there are in groups WITHIN actual PC gaming, causing stigma and favouritism, For example, my setup is AMD based which is generally cheaper compared to Intel, and I can’t tell you the amount of times my opinion has been considered insignificant as I buy “cheap crappy hardware”.

Fragility

I’m a bit of a clumsy fool at times, and this can carry over to the handling of my equipment. The amount of times I’ve had game pads, mice and keyboards slide off my desk with one fowl swoop is uncountable. For this reason, I’m a bit scared of my computer. Don’t get me wrong I’m happy to tinker inside of it, but just seeing how easily fans can break apart or have the things physically disconnect from bumps is a nightmare. In short, PCs are not something you can be careless or neglectful with in the same way as consoles. Some professionals also recommend cleaning the inside of your computer on a regular basis to reduce CPU temperatures, some people simply don’t have time for that sort of attention.

Piracy and Anti-cracking Software

There have recently been a few attempts to reduce piracy of games by using certain encryption software. Although I admire this and thoroughly support the concept, it often seems to hamper graphical performance of the game considerably for some reason or another that hasn’t really been properly explored.  I will also include in this all the frustrating clients and accounts you need to sign into to legitimise the game. It’s a more insignificant gripe, but is still something the consoles don’t suffer from nearly to the same extent.

Exclusivity

I know it’s a rich thing to moan about, but having certain games not come on PC is absolutely heartbreaking. I’ve been a big fan of the Infamous Series and being unable to play the latest installment – or Uncharted – is a real downer. I have my own theory on this, that certain companies feel as if the majority of their games get pirated so don’t consider the PC as much, but that’s a different story for another day.

Mouse and Keyboard

This is a very personal gripe of mine, I prefer playing with a gamepad because it’s just such an ergonomic design and excels in the games I love (like the Devil May Cry series), however, don’t go into the PC world thinking those skills mean anything online. It’s basically impossible to compete in multiplayer games with a gamepad as the pinpoint accuracy and quick mouse movements will have you killed before you can scream “hacks!”.
Now please remember, I do love PC as a games console, I’ve just seen too many people sing the immortal praises of PC and I wanted to even the playing field slightly. But with that being said…I’m going to go play some ‘immersive’ modded Fallout.
