Frozen State Review

Frozen State is a top down survival game, developed by FLOX Studios. that just released out of early access on 6th of August for £8.99/$11.99. Frozen State, as you can probably guess, focuses in surviving cold weather as well as the dangers of mutated zombie-like monsters and other survivors.

You start off with a cut scene to explain the story and what your main goal is. You begin in a house after your explorer has broken down and you must go into the city and other points of interest to scavenge for parts, that’ll help you rebuild the Explorer. Frozen State heavily focuses on keeping warm, you find this out mainly through the Overworld map which you use to travel across to get to the other points of interest. But as you move across the map, the temperature meter drops quite fast most of the time. The maps are decently sized and each corner has an exit point so it isn’t too hard to escape if the worst was to happen.

The movement of your character isn’t as smooth as it probably should be, when you run it’s easy to get caught on objects. The humans and monsters move pretty fluent which is good but when they move smooth and you’re getting stuck on walls and doors, it can can be frustrating, especially if you end up dying or losing a considerable amount of health because you got stuck while being chased. The camera controls pan really nicely and rotation controls are one of the best control choices of Frozen State. Looting buildings is much quicker when you can hold right-click and drag super quickly to rotate the camera to see the whole room.

The inventory system reminds me of a pip-boy from the old fallout games, the layout is very well done and everything is laid out so it’s very easy to use, drop, destroy and equip items. Melee weapons are rare, and guns even rarer and the monsters are very strong so avoiding combat is the best choice unless you have guns and a lot of ammo.

There is building and crafting, quite a lot of crafting. You can build cabins and defences to avoid being overrun. You can build fires, and put down sleeping bags so almost anywhere can be made into a nice little outpost. Being stealthy is highly recommended as the enemies in this game are absolutely deadly. There are monsters that shoot poison and if you don’t have the items to heal it, it’ll slowly kill you as well as worrying about food, thirst, temperature and many other meters.

Overall I think the game is pretty good, i enjoy these kind of survival games and this one has built itself up pretty nicely, I recommend it for all hardcore survival lovers.
