Nintendo Head Responds to Scorpio and NEO Announcements

When Bloomberg asked NoA Nintendo President Reggie Fils-Aime about how the upcoming NX would hold up next to Microsoft’s recently announced Project Scorpio and Sony’s PlayStation NEO, he had this to say: “For us, it’s not about specs, it’s not about teraflops, it’s not about the horsepower of a particular system. For us, it’s about the content. We’re focused on bringing our best entertainment to both the Wii U as well as the NX in the future. So for us, whatever Microsoft and Sony are doing in terms of talking about new systems, that’s for them to fight out in that red ocean.”

Well, crap. It’s understandable how his response could be translated into a doom and gloom scenario for Nintendo. It has damage control written all over it. Nintendo has been bringing up the rear in terms of console power for the past few generations. The phrase “for us it’s not about power. It’s about the content” is a cause for concern. Admirable? Yes. True? Well, yeah. But it goes without saying that the Wii U has been a failure both in horsepower and sales, and Nintendo fans could certainly use a boost in morale.

As of now the NX is slated for release in March, 2017. With the announcement of these rival consoles it will be interesting to see if Nintendo sticks to that release date, or instead will choose to delay the NX to further boost its specs. If they decide to roll with the date they’ve chosen, one would think they would have already begun spilling details about the console. With only nine months away until next March, we literally know nothing about the NX other than it being a “new way to play,” whatever that means. One thing is certain, Nintendo needs a win.
