ONE GAMER’S JOURNEY INTO THE UNKNOWN (PART 1)

What is Second Life? This is a question that could have plenty of answers, depending on who you ask. For some, it’s a place to go and be who they really want to be completely separate from their everyday lives. For me, its a once great idea turned into a desolate virtual world full of interesting people worth seeking out.  Having played games on my computer my whole life, Se-cond Life has always made its presence known to me. It was relatively successful, boasting live performances and even companies that held meetings in virtual offices. Now, after its popularity surge has ended, I have decided to go where many people fear. For the sake of journalism I have signed up and will be reporting back on my findings, right here on GamerLaughs.

My initial entry into the mysterious world of Second Life quickly confirmed the fact that that the community that I was voluntarily joining is extremely unique (and creepy). After signing up and choosing my identity, SUPERTomTuckerMAN (Superman disguised as Family Guy newscaster Tom Tucker), I was spawned into the charming city of New London. Because it was the tutorial section there were only a few others with me. Despite their appearances (truly indescribable creatures), I made it through the tutorial alive. There were a bunch of signs at the end that were honestly kind of charming and DEFINITELY ironic.

I say ironic only because adventure is the perfect word to describe Second Life. I spent some time in the little area after the tutorial because of the warning that was posted. It said that after the tutorial, I would be teleported to the REAL New London City with all of the other players that are there (and there was a helicopter).

Now I didn’t have much time to explore, I just wanted to get acquainted with the game before I began my exploration. It turns out I wouldn’t have to look far, as leaving the tutorial resulted in Second Life, excuse my language, going zero to one hundred REAL QUICK. This next screen-shot, no lie, is exactly what my screen looked like the second I spawned into Second Life:

Why were these people just dancing at the spawn? Why is there a dance floor with a raging party in the middle of a park? These are all questions that can only be answered by those individuals that partake in these gatherings. My initial trial with Second Life was very interesting to say the absolute least and proved to me that there is much potential here. People have been living their “second lives” for years, and I am determined to find them. I, SUPERTomTuckerMAN, investigative journalist, will seek out the weirdest, craziest, funniest things Second Life has to offer and will report them back here for your enjoyment.
